Board of Elections


The Board of Elections is an independent, bipartisan agency charged with overall responsibility for administration of the election process in Fayette County. The Board of Elections consists of the County Clerk, the County Sheriff, one Republican member and one Democratic member. As Chairman of the Board of Elections, the County Clerk is responsible for making sure all election mandates of the Kentucky Constitution and the Kentucky Revised Statutes are met. The County Board of Elections meets at least once every month and more often if necessary. The board stays in session all day on election days to correct clerical errors, to rule on voter registration questions, to instruct election precinct officers and to count absentee ballots.

County Board of Elections Responsibilities:

  • Administers election laws
  • Establishes precinct boundaries
  • Appoints election officers
  • Secures and inspects all voting locations
  • Examines all machines that will be used for the election
  • Reviews and counts absentee ballots on Election Day
  • Counts provisional ballots after election supplies are delivered to the County Clerk's office
  • Certifies election results after all votes have been counted
  • Issues Certificates of Election to local candidates

Polls are open on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The last day to register to vote in the Primary is Monday, April 23, 2012
